Why Japan?
Japan is a beautiful nation made up of over 3000 islands with a land area roughly the size of California. Its small size, however, has not hindered Japan from becoming the third strongest ranked economy in the world and developing a global reputation as a modern, high-tech, and well-educated society. Japanese products permeate the global marketplace with household names such as Sony, Toyota, and Canon.
However, Japan is a spiritually dark and needy country. Most people practice a mixture of Buddhism, Shintoism, and superstition. Many Japanese have never heard of Jesus. Most have never read the Bible, and few have ever entered a church building. The Japanese people are one of the world’s largest unreached people groups. Less than half of one percent of the population is evangelical Christian, and the existing Japanese church is fragile and marginalized with limited transforming influence on surrounding society.
Even so, God is working in Japan, and after decades of sowing by tireless missionaries and national believers, many believe that Japan is on the brink of a spiritual awakening. The earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disasters of 2011 have led to an increased spiritual openness in Japanese people. Our vision is to see a new generation of Japanese believers rise up as a vibrant, reproducing church to transform Japanese society with the hope of Jesus Christ and launch a movement of missionaries from Japan around the world.
