Why Youth?
Japanese youth are increasingly disillusioned with the status quo in Japanese society and more and more are rejecting the notion that they can trust their leaders in government, business, and education. They are turning to foreign influences in pop culture and philosophy and looking for meaning in ways their parents’ generation would never have considered, while still trying to maintain their cultural identity and traditions. Many young people live in hopelessness, and they often turn to materialism, alcohol, sexual immorality, and suicide as they seek to cope.
Though they are inheriting a broken economy, a society rampant with problems, a culture with a degraded sense of morality, and a host of other challenges, the youth of Japan will nevertheless be the movers and shakers of Japanese society in the next decades. In fact, the future of the church in Japan lies in today’s Japanese youth.
